The Butlers noted that in 40 years of visiting the area during the summer months, they have never had an encounter with the orcas quite like what happened on Sunday, and don’t expect to do so again. Alisa Schulman-Janiger, an orca researcher, confirmed that there was little doubt that the animal was observing the dog and the boat’s passengers. Although the animal’s intentions can’t be known, orcas rarely have the opportunity to observe dogs, though they’re used to seeing people, which may have made Sailor an object of curiosity for the larger mammal.
“It’s all conjecture, but this orca’s head is up and she’s very focused on the boat,” Schulman-Janiger said.
Watch the thrilling event here – seeing orcas in the wild is infinitely better than watching them perform from the confines of a tank, don’t you think?
