Great parents will do almost anything to make their child feel happy, loved and accepted. Case and point: Tanya and Adam Phillips changed the way their legs look forever for their beautiful daughter, Honey-Rae.

Honey-Rae was born with a unique birthmark stretching the length of her right leg. And so these awesome parents from the UK decided to get massive tattoos to match their daughter’s birthmark.

Many women get fancy presents for their 40th birthday, but all Tanya Phillips wanted was a tattoo, and her intentions couldn’t possibly be more pure. The mother of four headed to the tattoo parlor where she sat still for hours while the tattoo artist’s ink needle penned a bright red birthmark up the side of her right leg.

Never in a million years did Tanya ever imagine herself doing something like this. She even admits that the end results look a bit “garish,” but regardless she couldn’t be happier with her decision. A few months prior her husband got the same tattoo making these three family members look like triplets… well, almost!

Honey-Rae’s mother told the UK Mirror, “She struggled to breathe when she was first born and was rushed to the special care unit. When I went to see her she was just lying in a little incubator and that’s when I saw it. It broke my heart.”

From day one mom and dad wanted to make Honey-Rae feel special for her unique birthmark. “From the moment she was born, we told Honey-Rae she was beautiful and constantly covered her in kisses.”

Still, Tanya admits crying a lot at first, concerned about her being marked permanently for life. “Like any Mum I didn’t want her to be different…. And as much as the birthmark isn’t dangerous I knew it could have a huge impact on the rest of her life.”

Honey-Rae’s parents see her as 100% perfect just as she is, but they have their concerns about the unavoidable cruelty of others. For the first few months of Honey-Rae’s life mum kept her covered up when they went out in public. She explains, “I didn’t want sympathy or pity or people feeling sorry for Honey-Rae.”

Then one summer day, when Honey-Rae was less than a year old, Tanya took her out shopping in shorts and sandals. Mum recalls the day well, “I was stood at a check out till, when I saw an old couple whispering and staring at Honey-Rae’s leg. I was distraught. It was first time I had taken her out without covering her up and it confirmed all my worries and fears. People are cruel without even realizing.”

She knew then that if she caught old people starring and whispering, the kids at school would likely be worse. Tanya and Adam had discussed duplicate tattoos in the past but this experience solidified their decision into a reality.

For Adam’s Christmas present last year, mom gifted dad his leg tattoo, which extends from his thigh to his toe. Tanya says, “I went to watch as part of it was done. It did look red and angry but there was no doubt in either of our minds that it was perfect.”

Just a few weeks ago, for Tanya’s 40th birthday surprise, Adam paid for his wife to have the same tattoo inked onto her right leg. While mom admits the procedure was incredibly painful, she is so glad she went through with it.

Honey-Rae loves the tattoos so much she can’t stop touching them and giggling with glee.

“Some people will say it’s odd and think what we’ve done is quite extreme, but in our eyes all we have done is ensure Honey-Rae never feels different. Mummy and Daddy now have the same permanent markings as she does.”
